FAQ

General

What is a refrigerated or freezer trailer?

A refrigerated or freezer trailer is a mobile unit designed to keep products cold or frozen. These trailers are electric-powered and provide walk-in cold storage for food, beverages, flowers, pharmaceuticals, and more. They’re ideal for temporary use at commercial sites, events, or during equipment failures.

What types of refrigerated trailers and freezer trailers do you offer for rent or sale?

We offer both refrigerated (cooler) and freezer trailers in a range of sizes:

Walk-in cooler trailers:

  • 6′ x 6′
  • 7′ x 8′
  • 7′ x 10′
  • 7′ x 12′
  • 7′ x 16′

Ground-level containers:

  • 8′ x 20′

All units are electric-powered, clean, quiet, and certified for commercial use. Interior dimensions are typically 8″ less in length and width than the exterior.

What makes your company/trailers better than competitors?

Chill Out Rentals stands out for several reasons:

  • Electric-powered units: No diesel fumes, no fuel costs, no noise
  • Nationwide service: Available across the U.S. and Canada
  • Flexible rentals: Daily, weekly, monthly, or long-term options
  • Certified equipment: CSA, UL, NSF, and ESA compliant
  • 24/7 support: Fast response and reliable service
  • Clean and modern fleet: Professionally maintained and ready to use

Why choose on-site temporary cold storage?

On-site cold storage gives you control and convenience. You can:

  • Keep products cold without transporting them off-site
  • Avoid downtime during renovations or emergencies
  • Expand your storage during peak seasons
  • Maintain compliance with food safety and temperature regulations

It’s a smart solution for businesses that need reliable, short-term refrigeration.

Who makes your refrigerated trailers and freezer trailers?

Our trailers and containers are built by trusted North American manufacturers who specialize in commercial-grade refrigeration. Each unit is designed for durability, safety, and performance — and meets all required certifications for food-safe and pharmaceutical use.

How does a cold storage trailer work?

Our cold storage trailers are plug-and-play. Here’s how they work:

  • Delivery: We bring the unit to your site and position it where you need it.
  • Power connection: The unit connects directly to a dedicated outlet and circuit that matches its specific power requirements.
  • Temperature control: Set your desired temperature using the built-in thermostat.
  • Walk-in access: Use the secure door to load and access your products as needed.

No fuel. No noise. Just reliable cold storage, on demand.

What is a dual-temperature trailer / container?

A dual temperature walk-in is a single refrigerated enclosure with two separate sections — one for chilling (cooler) and one for freezing — operating at different temperatures simultaneously. This space-saving design lets you store refrigerated and frozen goods in one footprint for convenience and flexibility.

Rental Duration & Scheduling

What is your weekend rental period?

Weekend rentals are typically delivered on Thursday or Friday and picked up the following Monday or Tuesday. This gives you extra time with your cold storage unit so you’re never rushed during setup or takedown.

How long can I rent the units for?

We offer flexible rental terms to support your business needs. Units can be rented daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly — whatever works best for your schedule and storage requirements.

Can the units be rented long-term (over 1 year)?

Yes. We offer long-term cold storage rentals with discounted rates for contracts over one year. Ideal for businesses needing consistent, on-site refrigeration or freezer space.

How quickly can a unit be delivered?

Delivery times depend on your location, our availability, and your urgency. In many cases, we can deliver a refrigerated trailer or freezer container within just a few hours.

How do I reserve a refrigerated trailer or freezer trailer rental?

The easiest way to reserve is through our Request a Quote page. For immediate assistance, call us at +1 855-522-4455 and our team will help you secure the right unit fast.

When are you available?

We operate 24/7/365 and provide service nationwide across the U.S. and Canada. Whether it’s a planned rental or an emergency need, we’re always ready to help.

How long is the rental period for cold storage trailers and containers?

Our walk-in cooler and freezer walls are built with prefabricated insulated panels:

What parking/space requirements do the trailers need?

Trailer units require:

  • Length: 14′ to 20′ feet
  • Width: Minimum of 9′ feet

Additional space near the hitch and rear doors is needed for setup and access. Units can be placed on most surfaces and include anti-slip steps for safe entry.

What space requirement do the containers need?

Container units require:

  • Minimum length: 28′ feet
  • Width: 10′ feet to allow for side and rear access
  • Additional clearance: 5–6′ feet for door swing and drop-off setup

These units are ideal for on-site cold storage where ground-level access is preferred.

Power Requirements

What power do the units require?

Most units operate on a standard 120-Volt / 15-amp or 20-amp circuit. Larger trailers and containers may require 240-Volt / 30-amp single-phase or 480-Volt three-phase power. If placed outdoors, a GFCI outlet is required. Most household and commercial outlets meet these requirements.

Can the units run on a generator?

Yes. Many of our refrigerated trailers and freezer containers can run on generators. We offer generator rentals to ensure you have the power you need. Just let us know during booking.

How far can the trailer be placed from the power source?

Units can be placed up to 100 feet from the power source. We provide up to 100 feet of extension cord with each rental. If your site requires more distance, we’ll arrange a generator to be placed nearby.

Do you provide electrical services or hard-wiring?

No. We are not certified electricians. Clients are responsible for ensuring power is available and accessible at the time of delivery. Our team will complete setup and testing once power is confirmed.

Are your refrigerated trailers and freezer trailers equipped with generators for off-site use?

Units do not come with built-in generators, but we can provide one if needed. Let us know your power setup and we’ll make sure you’re covered.

How is the cold storage trailer powered?

All trailers and containers require an electrical connection. They are electric-powered, clean, and quiet — ideal for commercial and emergency use.

What are the electrical requirements for a trailer or container?

Small units: 120V / 15–20 Amp

Large units: 240V / 30 Amp or 480V / 3-phase

Outdoor use: GFCI outlet required

We’ll help you determine the right setup based on your location and unit type.

Does the site need to be level?

Safety & Security

Do you provide locks?

Yes. We supply locks and keys for the access doors to ensure your rental is secure from the moment it arrives.

Are there emergency door releases inside?

Yes. Every unit includes an emergency door release for safety, allowing anyone inside to exit easily.

Are the units CSA, UL, or ESA approved?

Yes. All units are CSA and UL approved, and we provide eSAFE certification for clients in Ontario. Our equipment meets commercial safety and compliance standards.

What security features does a trailer have?

  • A keyed padlock on the access door to prevent unauthorized entry
  • A hitch lock to prevent the trailer from being moved or stolen

These features help protect your inventory and ensure peace of mind during your rental period.

Operation & Use

How long does it take for the unit to cool down?

Cooling time depends on the unit type and size:

  • Coolers: 5 to 30 minutes
  • Freezers: 30 to 120 minutes

This assumes the door remains closed and the unit is not in use during the initial cooldown.

Can I load warm product into the unit?

No. Products should be pre-cooled before placing them in a cooler. Only pre-frozen items should be placed in a freezer to maintain proper temperature and performance.

Are there product storage limitations due to refrigeration capacity?

Yes. To ensure proper air circulation, products should not be stacked above 6 feet inside the unit. This helps maintain consistent cooling throughout.

Can the units be used indoors or outdoors?

Yes. Our units are designed for indoor and outdoor use. They are electric-powered, producing no fumes or gases, making them safe for enclosed environments.

Are ramps available for easier access?

Most rentals do not include ramps, but some units may have ramp options available. Contact a sales representative to discuss your access needs.

What is the temperature range of your refrigerated trailers and freezer trailers?

  • Refrigerated trailers: Typically 35°F to 40°F (1.6°C to 4.4°C)
  • Freezer trailers: As low as -10°F (-23°C)

Each unit includes a thermostat for precise control.

Can I monitor the temperature of my refrigerated trailer or freezer trailer remotely?

Yes. Upon request, we can provide a Wi-Fi thermometer for real-time monitoring and alerts. You may also use your own remote sensor inside the unit.

Why is the door difficult to open/close?

Cold storage doors are built for insulation and sealing, which can make them feel heavy or tight. If you experience issues, contact our support team for guidance.

How do I operate my unit(s)?

Units are fully set up by our staff upon delivery. No adjustments are needed. If you have questions, contact our support team for assistance.

Should I defrost my unit periodically?

No. Units are equipped with automatic defrost cycles. If you notice any issues, reach out to support for help.

How can I keep the unit free of ice/dust?

Limit how often and how long the door is open. This helps maintain temperature and reduces moisture buildup inside the unit.

At what temperatures do cold storage units operate?

  • Coolers: 35°F to 40°F (2°C to 5°C)
  • Freezers: Down to -10°F (-23°C)
  • ULT Freezers: Down to -122°F (-86°C)

These ranges support safe storage for food, pharmaceuticals, and other temperature-sensitive products.

Are there any restrictions on the types of items I can store in a cold storage trailer?

Yes. Please follow these guidelines:

  • No wild game or hunting-related items
  • No warm or unfrozen products in freezers — items must be pre-frozen
  • No open liquids or soups — all products should be sealed

These rules help maintain hygiene and protect the unit’s performance.

Can the trailers function as both coolers and freezers?

Most units can be set to either cooling or freezing mode, but not both at once. If you need dual-temperature storage, we offer combination units with separate compartments for chilling and freezing simultaneously.
